Abbreviated forms and punctuation
Periods are not used within or at the end of most abbreviations, including acronyms, abbreviated metric units of measure, and brief forms.

Use a period at the end of abbreviated nonmetric units of measure if they may be misread without the period. Keep in mind that nonmetric units of measure should only be abbreviated in tables; in the body of a medical report, they should be spelled out.
in. NOT in (or spelled out inch or inches)
ft. NOT ft (or spelled out foot or feet)
It is preferable not to use periods within abbreviated academic degrees and professional credentials. Follow specific guidelines set by employers, clients and/or accounts.
John Smith, PhD
Mary Jones, MD
Robert Folkman, RN
Use periods in lowercase drug-related abbreviations derived from Latin terms.
The preference is to not use periods with abbreviated personal and courtesy titles unless there is a known preference for including them. As always, check specific guidelines.
