Basic rules for abbreviations

• Abbreviate most units of measure that accompany numbers and include a virgule construction
• Use the same abbreviation for both singular and plural forms
• Do not use periods with abbreviated unis of measure
• Include a space between the arabic numeral and the abbreviation

5 dL
10 mg

These abbreviations are only used when a numeric quantity precedes the unit of measure.
