Capitalizing family titles

Capitalize words such as father, mother, aunt and uncle when they stand alone or are followed by a personal name.

The patient states her Aunt Peg suffered from a similar condition.
The famous Brother Billy made more headlines than Jimmy.
Let me ask Mother and Dad whether that date is open for them.
Do not capitalize family titles when they are preceded by possessives (such as my, your, his, her, our and their) and simply describe a family relationship.

My brother, Billy, made more headlines than I did.
He says his father told him the arm is broken.
My mother will be coming to visit.
That's what they say about your son.
If the family title forms a unit when used together with a first name, capitalize these titles, even when preceded by a possessive.

Frank wants us to meet his Uncle John. (Here, Uncle John is a unit.)
Frank wants us to meet his uncle, John Cunningham. (Here, uncle describes a family relationship.)
I asked the doctor to meet with my Grandmother May.
I asked the doctor to meet with my grandmother, May.
This distinction will be difficult to make in a dictation. There is no preference; use your discretion or follow company guidelines.
Family titles introduced by the prefix grand are not hyphenated; those introduced by the prefix great are hyphenated.

Grandmother May, Great-grandmother May, Great-great-grandmother May
grandson, great-grandson
granddaughter, great-granddaughter
Family titles that include terms like once removed require no special treatment.
