Use 's to make the plural form of single-digit numbers.

The wound was dressed with 4x4's.
They came in groups of 2's and 3's.

NOTE: This differs from the AMA Manual of Style.

Add s without an apostrophe for form the plural of numerals, including years.

He went to medical school in the 90s.
She is a woman in her 50s.
He has a history of illicit drug use in the 60s.
The patient states she retired in the late 1980s.

Numbers written as words are pluralized just like any other word.
